Review Questions

Your Review First of all I have to say that I have seen the classic Japanese film numerous times as well as the Cowboy western treatment starring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. I came to see what how else the film could possibly be presented. I have never been to the Winnipeg Fringe Festival (and I live in Winnipeg!), this being my first show of the festival I came away laughing and amazed at David Gaines' performance and theatrical ability. I laughed so hard that I could have sliced my stomach open with an imaginary samurai sword! It was a fantastic and amazing show. "How can he show seven samurai warriors on stage?" - he just did and they were all wonderful! I hope the rest of the shows I have tickets for this week will not let me down because after this high, I have a high ceiling for excellence that I will come to expect. Review Questions

Your Review This show has the largest cast I've ever seen in a one-man performance, and the sense of humour and play is pervasive through every moment and gesture. His minimalist use of masks and empty stage leave him to present the entire tale: which he does so with incredible skill. A trained mime, Gaines moves seamlessly between characters and scenes and brings the audience with him.

The show itself is spellbinding, and the bloodshed and mayhem is both impressive and hilarious. Gaines' sense of character and presence is phenomenal. There is almost no dialogue in the hour-long piece, and those moments of actual speech are perfectly placed for comic effect. Gaines uses his movement to impart the classic tale, and the minimal use of words amplifies the sense of humour.

Gaines also makes his own sound effects throughout the show to match with the action, most of which are utterly hilarious. As a word of warning - the sound effects are a bit addictive. I found myself not only repeating some of his sound effects days later, but still laughing at them. The sense of play is amplified by the descriptive yet silly noises and sounds.

This is a show you must see - twice, if you have the chance.
